Access to transportation is considered essential to seniors’ quality of life and their sense of freedom and independence to come and go from places. Volunteers play a crucial role in helping to increase access to transportation. However, several transportation providers have made note that the climbing gas prices have led to a loss of volunteers, cutbacks and a subsequent increase in the need to deny rides to clients who request them. All seniors deserve access to transportation to attend necessary appointments and outings, as well as social engagements. For clients on fixed incomes, with physical or cognitive disabilities or without family support and assistance, access to transportation services is even more crucial.
