At the end of this month and into February, the Ontario Government will distribute $200 cheques to all individuals who file taxes in the province, totalling $3 billion. This is in an effort to alleviate the rising cost of living for families.
Right now, many of our neighbours, friends and family are struggling – struggling to put food on their tables, to keep a roof over their heads and with their mental health. Our non-profit sector is also struggling to meet the demand of our community.
If this $200 is needed for your family, we most certainly think you should keep it. But if this payment serves as a bonus for your family and you have the means, we’d like to encourage you to pay it forward to one of our communities’ many local non-profits, for whom we know that it will make a real difference.
It’s a win-win – the non-profit will receive a donation that they can use to help some of our community’s most vulnerable and you will receive a tax receipt to apply to your taxes next year.
“We, in some ways more than others, totally understand that the affordability crisis has impacted everyone, and that might mean that despite wanting to support a cause that you might have previously, you just weren’t able to this past year,” said Glenna Banda, executive director, United Way Guelph Wellington Dufferin. “Even if you’re able to take a portion of the rebate to make a donation to one of our communities’ awesome non-profits, it will make a difference in helping some of our most vulnerable.”
