“A young person started as a student at our United Way funded program in November 2019. He came as a Grade 10 student with 4 credits from his community school, having been on a modified timetable and struggling to manage a significant addiction. In his time with us, he began working and earning Co-op credits with an arborist and found a new career goal and life path. He needed a creative and out of the box school plan, considering both his academic needs, along with appropriate community support he received through his youth worker. He worked nearly full-time hours, while still finding time to complete his studies. In January 2023, he was laid off from work, so he could focus on his studies full-time. His employer worked with the school to promise an apprenticeship when he graduated from our program.
Between Co-op and his in-class work, he completed 27 credits, including all of his compulsory courses and the pre-requisites he needed to go to college. He now uses meditation exercises, has planned meals, and is sober. He graduated in 2023, and was awarded a bursary and a student achievement award. He is still working full-time, and recently bought his own vehicle.
It took 4 years of a low barrier educational program, and creative planning to provide services holistically to this young person. This young person’s story is a reminder that youth need many things at once, and they need caring adults in their life to pivot with them, and never give up.“
